John calls people to repentance and baptism, reminding them that someone far greater is coming—One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. John’s ministry shows us the importance of preparing our hearts to recognize and follow Jesus, just as he prepared the way for the Savior. As Jesus is baptized and the heavens open, God declares, “You are my beloved Son,” confirming that Jesus is the promised Messiah and the focus of John’s ministry.
